Case Study: Laura
Laura is a 32 year old club runner who has run recreationally for much of her adult life before joining a club in 2020 and starting to train and race regularly. We did an initial assessment looking at her running uphill, downhill, over obstacles, at speed and longer distance. We also tested her agility, balance and coordination and reviewed her current training regime. We identified the following areas to focus on during an 8 week Mesocycle:
Agility & Balance: to be addressed with strength & conditioning, twice weekly drills & exercises before sessions
Fast, light feet: looking at foot strike and placement, with a higher knee drive. Also reduce rotation in the upper body when fatigued
Speed endurance: targetting a 5-10 second improvement in minute/mile pace over her fastest 10K.
Slower pace on easy days: targetting 8:15 - 8:30 minute/mile pace
Strength Training: avoiding heavy work on the lower body the day before a hard run session
Pre-race taper: reduced mileage and intensity in the days before a race.
Results
Half Marathon PB of 5 mins (1h 23m 40s)
10K PB of 1 min (38:02): a 10 second improvement in minutes per mile pace
An 11 second improvement in minute per mile pace in the 12 minute Cooper Test
Improved running form (as illustrated above)
Significant improvements in agility & balance tests
